Our Story

Nigerian Scouts learn first aid, pioneering, community service, leadership, environmental conservation, citizenship duties, camping and survival skills. The Scout Promise and Law remain at the heart of the movement, guiding young people to honor God, serve their country, help others and live with integrity and respect.

Today, the movement continues to modernize with new leadership and renewed vision. Umar Muhammed, recognized and supported by many Scout councils across Nigerian states, serves as the Chief Commissioner of the Scout Association of Nigeria. His leadership emphasizes growth in membership, stronger training for adult volunteers, digital development, national visibility and greater collaboration with schools, communities and youth-focused institutions. Under his guidance, the Association is working toward expanding Scouting to millions more Nigerian children and teenagers.

With over a century of history, The Scout Association of Nigeria remains a powerful platform for nation-building—shaping young people into disciplined, confident and service-driven citizens prepared to lead in a changing world. The Scout Association of Nigeria (TSAN) is one of the oldest and most respected youth development movements in West Africa, founded on the principles of character-building, citizenship education, discipline, and service to humanity. Rooted in the vision of Lord Baden-Powell, Scouting was introduced into Nigeria during the early 1910s and has since grown into a nationwide institution that develops young people into responsible, confident and community-minded leaders.

The Association operates through structured youth sections—Cub Scouts, Scouts, Venture Scouts and Rover Scouts—each designed to nurture creativity, discipline, outdoor skills, teamwork and moral values appropriate to different stages of growth.
